Cameras and Shooting Gear for Subrosan
We are well into episode 1 shooting for Subrosan. Way beyond time for an update.
Sorry, just been so busy with the writing, auditions, acquiring gear, and scheduling shooting locations (my least favorite part of the indie film game).
New cool boxes are in with 1000 watts of 7500K in each bank and we acquired 4 banks. That should be more than enough for the small box shooting we’re doing. I also have 2 500-W halogens to do fill light and for giving a little starkness to our raw look – this is important for the mood of Subrosan which is a diabolical secret society thriller.
We’ve also settled on cameras. I am using a Cannon T3i for master shot and as much as possible – depending on how much on-set help we have, Lisa will do cross and b-roll with her Cannon t2i.
This combination allows us to not only run two cameras for many shots (saving precious on-location time) but it lets us test these cameras and see performance and raw output quality in the final product – we know full well going in that these sub-$1K dslr cameras are awesome but we are using them at the very top of their range. That is a decision I take responsibility for right here and now.
I would rather shoot with 2 low-end DSLR cameras then with a single RED Epic.
I won’t repeat that (just read it again – see above) and I stand by the decision. Yes it was partially a budget consideration, but honestly I value two good cameras (wish I could afford 6) more than one great camera. I like to get the shot and get the action right now in one take and as raw as possible.
Anyway we’ve got lighting and 2 good cameras. We are making a go at a fully independent TV pilot on a micro budget (under 100K) so here goes…. Subrosan!
